In the AI group, blastocyst images captured under time-lapse microscopy were scored and ranked using an AI algorithm developed by Fertsy. The embryologist then selected the most promising blastocyst for transfer based on the system’s recommendations, and pregnancy and neonatal outcomes were tracked. The final results showed that, compared to traditional manual assessment, the clinical pregnancy rate in the AI group was significantly improved (68.15% vs. 80.87%, p=0.022), and the live birth rate increased from 62.22% to 70.43%.

Innovative explainable AI model

Traditional black-box AI models face numerous challenges in clinical application due to the difficulty of explaining their reasoning processes. To address this issue, Fertsy has proposed an explainable AI embryo selection algorithm framework in the field of assisted reproduction. This framework is based on established medical consensus, uses deep learning technology to quantitatively measure multiple morphological indicators, and ultimately builds an embryo assessment system where both the process and the results are explainable.

In recent years, the infertility rate among couples of childbearing age in China has been rising continuously, reaching 18% in first-tier cities, with 9.6 million infertile couples. Infertility has become a significant factor affecting China’s population issues. Although an increasing number of families are turning to assisted reproduction techniques, and the number of test-tube babies born annually in China has approached 400,000, with 3.7% of newborns being born through assisted reproduction, there is still considerable room to improve the success rate of this technology.

At the same time, there remains a significant imbalance in the technical level between different regions and different fertility centers, affecting the accessibility of this technology. The combination of artificial intelligence and assisted reproduction technology offers a solution to further improve the success rate and alleviate the shortage of high-quality medical resources. The integration of AI, automation, and biomedical technology is widely recognized as the future direction of assisted reproduction laboratories.

The formal publication of this report is the first to demonstrate, through a prospective comparative trial, that an AI system can more accurately select embryos and improve the success rate of assisted reproduction. On the other hand, it also validates the concept of the explainable AI system proposed and developed by our company. During this study, the system worked closely with embryologists, helping them make more objective and accurate judgments. The publication of the research report has laid a solid foundation for the promotion and further optimization of this system. It is one of the specialty departments of obstetrics and gynecology and was among the first five institutions approved by the former Ministry of Health to carry out human assisted reproduction technologies. It is also one of the 13 institutions approved by the National Health and Family Planning Commission to conduct the clinical application pilot of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) using high-throughput gene sequencing. Additionally, it is a Key Specialty of Maternal and Child Health in Jiangsu Province and a Reproductive Medicine Innovation Team under Jiangsu Province’s ’12th Five-Year Plan for Science and Education Revitalizing Health’ project. The center routinely performs a series of assisted reproduction techniques, including intrauterine insemination, in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, gamete and embryo cryopreservation, preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening, and in vitro maturation of immature oocytes.
",false,"https://shengshengyi.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/wechat-ar2vqt359oykmfl5vi50pb4drplf1gqxn3kat2hc3rn9bk86wfykiy8untbv8svg-0-cover.jpg",[17],3,[],0,"AI embryo selection","AI embryo selection | Fertsy","A clinical study conducted in collaboration between Fertsy and the Reproductive Medicine Center of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital was recently officially pub…",1786842061876]
